Hockey Earns #3 Seed In MCHC Playoffs; Will Face #2 Wagner Saturday In Semis

THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (Feb. 16, 2011) – As Metropolitan Collegiate Hockey Conference (MCHC) action wrapped up this past weekend, the 2011 playoff picture was solidified and the Maritime Privateers have earned the #3 seed in the tournament, which will take place this coming weekend at the AmeriHealth Pavilion at the Prudential Center in Newark, N.J. The Privateers will take on the #2-seed Wagner Seahawks at 4 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 19.

Maritime enters the playoffs with a 16-8 overall record, including a 13-3 mark in MCHC contests, good for 26 points and a third place finish in the regular season. The Privateers have been on a tear as of late, having only lost one of their last 11 games dating back to Nov. 20.

In 16 conference games played, freshman goalie Zach Dietrich (Point Pleasant, N.J./Christian Brothers Academy) leads all goaltenders with a 2.41 goals against average and a 91.8-percent save percentage while compiling the 13-3 record. Classmate Nick Galli (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Joseph by the Sea) ranks 10th in the MCHC with 31 points (22 goals and nine assists) in conference action, while his six power play goals ranks fourth.

As a team, Maritime is tied for the league lead in penalty killing, allowing opponents to score on just 12-percent of their power play opportunities, while the squad’s 22-percent power play ranks fifth in the conference.

The winner of Saturday’s game will move on to face the victor of the earlier semi-final matchup between #1-seed Fordham and #4-seed County College of Morris. The championship game will be held on Sunday, Feb. 20, at 5 p.m. at the AmeriHealth Pavilion.

Five First-Period Goals Propel Hockey To 8-1 Rout Of Stevens Saturday Night

THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (Feb. 7, 2011) – The Maritime hockey team defeated Metropolitan Conference foe Stevens Institute of Technology, 8-1, Saturday night at the Parkwood Sports Complex. The win improves the Privateers record to 15-8 overall (12-3 MCHC), while the Ducks fall to 5-9 in conference play.

Maritime scored five goals in the first period, led by freshman Dillon Dolansky (Monroe, N.Y./John S. Burke Catholic), who tallied the first two of the contest. The first came on a power play from sophomore James McManmus (Pearl River, N.Y./Pearl River) and junior Greg Dolan (Floral Park, N.Y./St. Mary's) at 11:00, while the second was at even strength just over a minute later from freshman Conner Brailsford (Clayton, N.C./Clayton) and junior Dylan O’Malley-Joyce (Cranford, N.J./Cranford). Junior Daniel Tyx (Amherst, N.Y./Williamsville East) scored 41 seconds later to give the Privateers a 3-0 lead from McManmus and freshman Nick Galli (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Joseph By the Sea).

Sophomore Sean Dougherty (Holtsville, N.Y./Sachem East) and freshman Ross Freund (Westbury, N.Y./Chaminade) both lit the lamp to end the scoring in the first period. Dolan assisted on both goals, as McManmus also picked up his third assist on Dougherty’s goal and junior John Jackson (Pawling, N.Y./Amherst Central) had the primary assist on Freund’s tally.

In the second period, Dolan scored from Jackson and Dougherty at 18:13 and Galli scored unassisted at 5:49 to put Maritime up, 7-0. McManmus scored the last goal for the Privateers late in the third period, after Stevens had gotten on the board with a goal at 14:57.

All three goalies played for Maritime in the victory, with freshman Zach Dietrich (Point Pleasant, N.J./Christian Brothers Academy) earning the win after a scoreless first period stopping five Ducks shots. Classmate Arthur Winckler (Bayville, N.Y./Locust Valley) played the second period and made four saves, while sophomore D.J. Gennarelli (Bohemia, N.Y./Connetquot) was between the pipes in the final period and made two saves.

Maritime will end the regular season this coming Friday, Feb. 11, when the squad travels to West Nyack, N.Y., to take on MCHC-opponent St. Thomas Aquinas at the Palisades Center. The puck is scheduled to drop at 7:15 p.m. The Privateers have also clinched a spot in the MCHC Playoffs, which will be held at the AmeriHealth Pavilion at the Prudential Center in Newark, N.J., the weekend of Feb. 19-20.
