Hockey Downs Fordham, 3-1, Saturday Night

THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (October 19, 2010) – Over the previous two season, the Fordham hockey team has had Maritime’s number – winning the three contests played between the two schools by the combined scores of 21-5. However, the Privateers proved to be victorious over the perennially powerhouse Rams, 3-1, Saturday night at the Parkwood Sports Complex. With the win, Maritime improved to 3-2 overall on the season.

Junior forward Jesse Wynn (Brooklyn, N.Y./St. Edmund's Prep) recorded a goal and an assist in the victory. He scored the first goal of the game on a power play just 2:29 after the puck dropped for the opening faceoff.

The Privateers struck twice more in the first period. Freshman Patrick Masterman (Norfolk, Va./Hargrave Military Academy) found the back of the net under two minutes after Wynn after assists by junior Kyle McGrath (Alexandria, Va./Hayfield Secondary) and sophomore Dean Malanga (Lavalette, N.J./Monsignor Donovan). Then with 9:49 remaining, freshman Kyle Troup (Lancaster, Pa./Penn Manor) cashed in on passes from Wynn and junior Dylan Tyx (Amherst, N.Y./Williamsville East).

The score remained 3-0 until 4:36 remaining to play, when Fordham’s John Timoni scored to ruin the shutout. Maritime goalie, freshman Zach Dietrich (Point Pleasant, N.J./Christian Brothers Academy), was strong between the pipes, stopping 37 Rams shots.

Maritime squared off against Hofstra on Sunday and dropped the game by the score of 7-4. That loss puts the Privateers at an even 3-3 on the season. The squad returns to action on Friday night, Oct. 22, when it plays host to MCHC opponent Suffolk at 10:15 p.m. at the Parkwook Sports Complex in Great Neck, Long Island, N.Y.
