Another Galli Hat Trick Leads Hockey To 4-1 Victory Over Suffolk Friday

THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (Oct. 23, 2010) – Freshman phenom Nick Galli recorded his second hat trick of the season and picked up an assist to lead the Maritime hockey team to a 4-1 victory over MCHC-foe Suffolk Friday night at the Parkwood Sports Complex in Great Neck, N.Y. The win improves the Privateers’ record to 4-3 overall on the season.
Galli now ranks third in the country in goals scored in Division-III of the American Collegiate Hockey Association (ACHA). His two game-winning goals ties him for the nation’s lead, while his two shorthanded goals ranks second.

The 5-9 forward scored the game’s first goal 15:29 into the opening period. Sophomore Frank Castelli (Little Neck, N.Y./St. Francis Prep) and freshman Steven Vietri (Bronx, N.Y./Fortress Christian Academy) had assists on that goal. Suffolk scored just under three minutes later to tie the game at 1-1. Galli scored again in the second period on a power play from Castelli.

Castelli improved the Maritime lead to 3-1 with 6:23 remaining in the middle period. Galli and freshman Josh Hempel (Katy, Texas/Cinco Ranch) picked up the assists. Galli scored his third goal of the game shorthanded with nine seconds remaining in the game. Freshman Jeff Dolan (Floral Park, N.Y./Saint Mary's) had the assist.

In goal for Maritime, freshman Zach Dietrich (Point Pleasant, N.J./Christian Brothers Academy) made 27 saves to pick up the victory.

The Privateers return to the ice on Friday, Oct. 29, when the team travels to Poughkeepsie, N.Y. to take on MCHC-opponent SUNY New Paltz. The puck drops at 9:15 p.m. at the Mid-Hudson Civic Center.

Hockey Downs Fordham, 3-1, Saturday Night

THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (October 19, 2010) – Over the previous two season, the Fordham hockey team has had Maritime’s number – winning the three contests played between the two schools by the combined scores of 21-5. However, the Privateers proved to be victorious over the perennially powerhouse Rams, 3-1, Saturday night at the Parkwood Sports Complex. With the win, Maritime improved to 3-2 overall on the season.

Junior forward Jesse Wynn (Brooklyn, N.Y./St. Edmund's Prep) recorded a goal and an assist in the victory. He scored the first goal of the game on a power play just 2:29 after the puck dropped for the opening faceoff.

The Privateers struck twice more in the first period. Freshman Patrick Masterman (Norfolk, Va./Hargrave Military Academy) found the back of the net under two minutes after Wynn after assists by junior Kyle McGrath (Alexandria, Va./Hayfield Secondary) and sophomore Dean Malanga (Lavalette, N.J./Monsignor Donovan). Then with 9:49 remaining, freshman Kyle Troup (Lancaster, Pa./Penn Manor) cashed in on passes from Wynn and junior Dylan Tyx (Amherst, N.Y./Williamsville East).

The score remained 3-0 until 4:36 remaining to play, when Fordham’s John Timoni scored to ruin the shutout. Maritime goalie, freshman Zach Dietrich (Point Pleasant, N.J./Christian Brothers Academy), was strong between the pipes, stopping 37 Rams shots.

Maritime squared off against Hofstra on Sunday and dropped the game by the score of 7-4. That loss puts the Privateers at an even 3-3 on the season. The squad returns to action on Friday night, Oct. 22, when it plays host to MCHC opponent Suffolk at 10:15 p.m. at the Parkwook Sports Complex in Great Neck, Long Island, N.Y.

Galli’s Hat Trick Leads Hockey To 9-1 Win Over Kings Point

THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (Oct. 11, 2010) – The Maritime hockey team defeated arch-rivals Kings Point, 9-1, Saturday night at the Parkwood Ice Complex in Great Neck. The win improves the Privateers’ record to an even 2-2 on the season, while the Mariners open their season with a 0-1 mark.
Freshman Nick Galli ( Staten Island, N.Y./St. Joseph’s by the Sea) recorded a hat trick in the victory, scoring the first goal of the game, shorthanded, 12:11 into the game. He later added two power play goals, one in the first period and the other in the third. Linemate Josh Hempel (Cady, Texas/Cinco Ranch) added three assists in the game after playing in the Maritime football game against Castleton earlier in the day.

Junior Kyle McGrath (Alexandria, Va./Hayfield Secondary) made his first appearance as a forward and tallied a goal and an assist. The Privateers also got goals from Dylan O'Malley-Joyce (Cranford, N.J./Cranford), Jesse Wynn (Brooklyn, N.Y./St. Edmund's Prep), Frank Castelli (Little Neck, N.Y./St. Francis Prep.), Patrick Masterman (Norfolk, Va./Hargrave Military) and Steven Altini (Staten Island, N.Y. / St. Joseph By the Sea).

Hockey Hosts Arch-Rival Kings Point Saturday At 8:45 p.m. In Great Neck

THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (Oct. 8, 2010) – The Maritime hockey team will play host to its arch-rival from across the Long Island Sound, the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point tomorrow, Saturday, Oct. 9. The puck will drop at 8:45 p.m. at the Parkwood Ice Complex in Great Neck, Long Island, N.Y.

Prior to the 2010-11 campaign, Kings Point joined Maritime in the Metropolitan Collegiate Hockey Conference, meaning the Privateers will take on the Mariners twice during the regular season (tomorrow and Mon., Nov. 29 – also at Parkwood).

Tomorrow’s game will mark the first non-exhibition contest between the two institutions which share a long rivalry. Alumni from both schools often cross paths during their professional careers on the high seas, sometimes as far as the complete opposite side of the planet, and the Maritime graduates own the bragging rights after the exhibition game played at the end of the 2009-10 campaign that the Privateers won, 5-2.

Maritime is off to a 1-2 start thus far in 2010-11, picking up a season opening victory over Hofstra before falling to Division-II NJIT and Farmingdale State. The Privateers have been led by sophomore Frank Castelli (Little Neck, N.Y./St. Francis Prep.) and freshmen Nick Galli (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Joseph By the Sea) and Josh Hempel (Katy, Texas/Cinco Ranch) who each have a goal and two assists for a team-leading three points on the season.

In goal, freshman Zach Dietrich (Point Pleasant, N.J./Christian Brothers Academy) picked up the Privateers only win of the season thus far.

Some Quick Notes from Duce

Maritime Hockey's first league game for the "MCHC" is against Kings Point coming up this Saturday at Parkwood Rink in Great Neck. Game time is 8:45pm and I would ask the alumni to come out and support the team.

Alumni Game - we're looking at possibly January 22nd at Parkwood. It's an open ice slot date on our schedule and we will put it to good use for an alumni game. I'll send out a confirmation within the next two weeks.  Be on the lookout.
