Maritime Hockey Needs Your Help

Hockey Alumni:

As you know, SUNY Maritime's hockey team is going into its third season in the ACHA (http://www.achahockey.org/ ). In addition, we will be playing a full conference schedule in the Metropolitan Collegiate Hockey Conference http://www.methockey.com/ ). Maritime has two MCHC championships (1980 and 1991) and we are looking to make it a third.

The program has grown immensely and we now have 35 players on the roster including 16 freshmen and two transfers. You can check out our roster either here:
http://maritimeathletics.com/roster.aspx?path=hockey
or here: http://achahockey.org/team_roster.php?team_id=59152&league_id=1063.

We will play a 24 game schedule this year plus the MCHC and ACHA playoffs. With King's Point joining our conference, we will now play them twice a year. The guys already have the dates circled on their calendars and can't wait to put a couple more "W"s on the board.

You can view our full schedule here:
http://maritimeathletics.com/schedule.aspx?path=hockey . We want to invite you all out to our games and hope to see you there.

I am also writing to ask your help with funding. As you all know, the state is in a huge budget crisis. Luckily, the administration has been supportive of the hockey team and has continued to fund us. We still must ask each player to pay $500 to cover ice costs and to buy their team warm-ups, bags, shells, and game socks. This doesn't allow us wiggle room in our budget for things that would really add to the program. Here is a list of some of the wants and needs of the hockey program:

Tape- Hockey tape can be expensive, but if we buy it in bulk the team will save plenty of money. It is a nice little perk to be able to provide tape for the guys.

COST = $121.50 (per case of white cloth- 90 rolls) COST = $140.40 (per case of black cloth- 90 rolls) COST = $155.52 (per case of clear tape-108 rolls)

Helmet Decals- To allow us to look as professional as possible, these decals would be on the front of the helmet ("Maritime"), sides of the helmet (athletics split "M"), and back (ship logo), and would also include numbers on the player's helmets. Here is a link to the website that we were hoping to use: http://www.prohelmetdecals.com/hockey.html

COST = $265

Slide Board- We have implemented a mandatory off-ice training program in order to be stronger and faster than everyone else. We need a slide board (or slide boards) for the guys to be able to train properly. This board will allow them to work on skating, stickhandling, passing and shooting:
http://www.hockeyshot.com/G1_Extreme_Slide_Board_Goalie_slide_board_p/slide-board-002.htm

COST = $379.95

Bosu Trainers (4)- Bosu trainers will help our players with their balance and functional strength:
http://www.palossports.com/store/proddetail.cfm/ItemID/3402/CategoryID/64/SubCatID/3112/file.htm

COST = $509.95

Skate Sharpener- Our practices are late at night, so most times when we get there, the pro shop is closed. In addition, a skate sharpening can cost between $8-10. With the sharpener on campus a skate sharpening would cost us pennies: http://www.wissota.com/toppage.htm

COST = $799.99

Make the SUNY Maritime hockey team a Division 1 program- If Penn State can do it?

COST = $88,000,000 (This includes a rink with two ice surfaces and endowed scholarships)

In addition to all of the above, we will take donations of any amount.

All checks should be made out to SUNY Maritime College with a notation it's for "Maritime Hockey". You can also buy Maritime Hockey gear; sweatshirts are $40, T-shirts are $20. We look forward to making you all proud of our accomplishments and thank you for your continued support of the program.

Sincerely,

Matthew Garofalow, Head Coach, mgarofalow@sunymaritime.edu
