THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (Sept. 30, 2010) – The Maritime hockey team began the 2010-2011 season off with a strong 4-3 victory over Hofstra on Saturday, Sept. 25, at the Parkwood Sports Complex in Great Neck, N.Y. The very next day the squad took on Division-II opponent NJIT in Newark, N.J. and lost by the score of 7-4, to open the year with a 1-1 record.
The Pride scored the opening goal on Saturday on a first period power play, but Maritime responded just three minutes later when freshman Nick Galli (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Joseph By the Sea) tallied the Privateers’ first goal of the season on assists by sophomore Frank Castelli (Little Neck, N.Y./St. Francis Prep) and Josh Hempel (Katy, Texas/Cinco Ranch) and the teams went to the locker rooms tied at 1-1.
Hemple put Maritime ahead, 2-1, just 5:28 into the second period when got the puck past the Hofstra keeper after passes from Castelli and Galli. Just under seven minutes later, it was Castelli to score on a power play and his goal was assisted by Galli and Hempel and Maritime led 3-1. The Pride answered right back with two goals just over a minute apart from each other to tie the score at 3-3, which it remained into the second intermission.
In the third period, junior Tom Mehmet (Little Neck, N.Y./St. Mary's) scored the go-ahead goal while Maritime was shorthanded with just 9:34 remaining. The Privateers held on to the 4-3 lead and freshman goalie Zach Dietrich (Point Pleasant, N.J./Christian Brothers Academy) picked up 41 saves in the game for the first win of his career.
On Sunday against NJIT, the Highlanders built up an early 5-1 lead after one period of play. The game evened out and the score was 6-2 into the second intermission. Maritime scored two goals early in the third period to make the score 6-4 and had momentum on a power play, but took a penalty that evened the skaters on the ice. NJIT scored another goal late in the game to close out the scoring. Maritime goal scorers for the game were freshman Patrick Masterman (Norfolk, Va./Hargrave Military Academy), Connor Brailsford (Clayton, N.C./Clayton), Galli and Castelli.
The Privateers return to the ice this Saturday, Oct. 2, when the team travels to Freeport, N.Y. at the Freeport Recreation Center Ice Rink to take on Farmingdale Sate. Faceoff is scheduled for 8 p.m.

Maritime Hockey Needs Your Help
Hockey Alumni:
As you know, SUNY Maritime's hockey team is going into its third season in the ACHA (http://www.achahockey.org/ ). In addition, we will be playing a full conference schedule in the Metropolitan Collegiate Hockey Conference http://www.methockey.com/ ). Maritime has two MCHC championships (1980 and 1991) and we are looking to make it a third.
The program has grown immensely and we now have 35 players on the roster including 16 freshmen and two transfers. You can check out our roster either here:
http://maritimeathletics.com/roster.aspx?path=hockey
or here: http://achahockey.org/team_roster.php?team_id=59152&league_id=1063.
We will play a 24 game schedule this year plus the MCHC and ACHA playoffs. With King's Point joining our conference, we will now play them twice a year. The guys already have the dates circled on their calendars and can't wait to put a couple more "W"s on the board.
You can view our full schedule here:
http://maritimeathletics.com/schedule.aspx?path=hockey . We want to invite you all out to our games and hope to see you there.
I am also writing to ask your help with funding. As you all know, the state is in a huge budget crisis. Luckily, the administration has been supportive of the hockey team and has continued to fund us. We still must ask each player to pay $500 to cover ice costs and to buy their team warm-ups, bags, shells, and game socks. This doesn't allow us wiggle room in our budget for things that would really add to the program. Here is a list of some of the wants and needs of the hockey program:
Tape- Hockey tape can be expensive, but if we buy it in bulk the team will save plenty of money. It is a nice little perk to be able to provide tape for the guys.
COST = $121.50 (per case of white cloth- 90 rolls) COST = $140.40 (per case of black cloth- 90 rolls) COST = $155.52 (per case of clear tape-108 rolls)
Helmet Decals- To allow us to look as professional as possible, these decals would be on the front of the helmet ("Maritime"), sides of the helmet (athletics split "M"), and back (ship logo), and would also include numbers on the player's helmets. Here is a link to the website that we were hoping to use: http://www.prohelmetdecals.com/hockey.html
COST = $265
Slide Board- We have implemented a mandatory off-ice training program in order to be stronger and faster than everyone else. We need a slide board (or slide boards) for the guys to be able to train properly. This board will allow them to work on skating, stickhandling, passing and shooting:
http://www.hockeyshot.com/G1_Extreme_Slide_Board_Goalie_slide_board_p/slide-board-002.htm
COST = $379.95
Bosu Trainers (4)- Bosu trainers will help our players with their balance and functional strength:
http://www.palossports.com/store/proddetail.cfm/ItemID/3402/CategoryID/64/SubCatID/3112/file.htm
COST = $509.95
Skate Sharpener- Our practices are late at night, so most times when we get there, the pro shop is closed. In addition, a skate sharpening can cost between $8-10. With the sharpener on campus a skate sharpening would cost us pennies: http://www.wissota.com/toppage.htm
COST = $799.99
Make the SUNY Maritime hockey team a Division 1 program- If Penn State can do it?
COST = $88,000,000 (This includes a rink with two ice surfaces and endowed scholarships)
In addition to all of the above, we will take donations of any amount.
All checks should be made out to SUNY Maritime College with a notation it's for "Maritime Hockey". You can also buy Maritime Hockey gear; sweatshirts are $40, T-shirts are $20. We look forward to making you all proud of our accomplishments and thank you for your continued support of the program.
Sincerely,
Matthew Garofalow, Head Coach, mgarofalow@sunymaritime.edu
