THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (Nov. 30, 2010) – In front of a large group of students and fans, the Maritime ice hockey team defeated its arch-rival from across the Long Island Sound, Kings Point, 11-2, Monday night at the Parkwood Sports Complex in Long Island. The win improves the Privateers' record to 9-7 on the season.
"This was a great game for us, we came out strong and played a solid 60 minutes," said head coach Matt Garofalow. "It was also great to see so many of the Maritime student body in attendance for the game, it added to the rivalry of the game."
Maritime's special teams played extremely well, as the Privateers scored six power play goals and two shorthanded goals in the victory. Freshman Nick Galli (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Joseph By the Sea) scored his third hat trick of the season.
Sophomore James McManus (Pearl River, N.Y./Pearl River) scored the first two goals of the game just over four minutes apart in nearly the same fashion, a slapshot from the right point. Kings Point responded with a goal, but Maritime answered right back when freshman Ross Freund (Westbury, N.Y./Chaminade) found the back of the net on another slapshot from the point. Freshman Patrick Masterman (Norfolk, Va./Hargrave Military Academy) rounded out the scoring in the first period with a tally with 46 seconds left to play, sending Maritime into the locker room up 4-1.
The Privateers controlled the play in the second period, scoring four goals, including two on the power play and one shorthanded. Junior Greg Dolan (Floral Park, N.Y./St. Mary's) tallied the shorthanded goal on a breakaway to begin the scoring. Junior Dylan Tyx (Amherst, N.Y./Williamsville East) also scored on a breakaway while Maritime was on the power play. Galli scored the first of his three while falling down at even strength with six minutes left to play in the second. A goal by freshman Steven Altini (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Joseph By the Sea) sent the Privateers into the locker room with an 8-1 advantage. Through two periods of play, freshman goalie Zach Dietrich (Point Pleasant, N.J./Christian Brothers Academy), who earned the win on the night, recorded 14 saves while allowing just one goal.
Dietrich was replaced by freshman Arthur Winckler (Bayville, N.Y./Locust Valley) at the beginning of the third period and made seven saves for Maritime. Two goals by Galli sandwiched another tally by Dolan in the final stanza to round out the Privateers' scoring on the night. Kings Point scored its second goal with 2:15 remaining.

Hockey Hosts Arch-Rival Kings Point Saturday At 8:45 p.m. In Great Neck
THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (Oct. 8, 2010) – The Maritime hockey team will play host to its arch-rival from across the Long Island Sound, the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point tomorrow, Saturday, Oct. 9. The puck will drop at 8:45 p.m. at the Parkwood Ice Complex in Great Neck, Long Island, N.Y.
Prior to the 2010-11 campaign, Kings Point joined Maritime in the Metropolitan Collegiate Hockey Conference, meaning the Privateers will take on the Mariners twice during the regular season (tomorrow and Mon., Nov. 29 – also at Parkwood).
Tomorrow’s game will mark the first non-exhibition contest between the two institutions which share a long rivalry. Alumni from both schools often cross paths during their professional careers on the high seas, sometimes as far as the complete opposite side of the planet, and the Maritime graduates own the bragging rights after the exhibition game played at the end of the 2009-10 campaign that the Privateers won, 5-2.
Maritime is off to a 1-2 start thus far in 2010-11, picking up a season opening victory over Hofstra before falling to Division-II NJIT and Farmingdale State. The Privateers have been led by sophomore Frank Castelli (Little Neck, N.Y./St. Francis Prep.) and freshmen Nick Galli (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Joseph By the Sea) and Josh Hempel (Katy, Texas/Cinco Ranch) who each have a goal and two assists for a team-leading three points on the season.
In goal, freshman Zach Dietrich (Point Pleasant, N.J./Christian Brothers Academy) picked up the Privateers only win of the season thus far.

Some Quick Notes from Duce
Maritime Hockey's first league game for the "MCHC" is against Kings Point coming up this Saturday at Parkwood Rink in Great Neck. Game time is 8:45pm and I would ask the alumni to come out and support the team.
Alumni Game - we're looking at possibly January 22nd at Parkwood. It's an open ice slot date on our schedule and we will put it to good use for an alumni game. I'll send out a confirmation within the next two weeks. Be on the lookout.

Maritime Hockey Needs Your Help
Hockey Alumni:
As you know, SUNY Maritime's hockey team is going into its third season in the ACHA (http://www.achahockey.org/ ). In addition, we will be playing a full conference schedule in the Metropolitan Collegiate Hockey Conference http://www.methockey.com/ ). Maritime has two MCHC championships (1980 and 1991) and we are looking to make it a third.
The program has grown immensely and we now have 35 players on the roster including 16 freshmen and two transfers. You can check out our roster either here:
http://maritimeathletics.com/roster.aspx?path=hockey
or here: http://achahockey.org/team_roster.php?team_id=59152&league_id=1063.
We will play a 24 game schedule this year plus the MCHC and ACHA playoffs. With King's Point joining our conference, we will now play them twice a year. The guys already have the dates circled on their calendars and can't wait to put a couple more "W"s on the board.
You can view our full schedule here:
http://maritimeathletics.com/schedule.aspx?path=hockey . We want to invite you all out to our games and hope to see you there.
I am also writing to ask your help with funding. As you all know, the state is in a huge budget crisis. Luckily, the administration has been supportive of the hockey team and has continued to fund us. We still must ask each player to pay $500 to cover ice costs and to buy their team warm-ups, bags, shells, and game socks. This doesn't allow us wiggle room in our budget for things that would really add to the program. Here is a list of some of the wants and needs of the hockey program:
Tape- Hockey tape can be expensive, but if we buy it in bulk the team will save plenty of money. It is a nice little perk to be able to provide tape for the guys.
COST = $121.50 (per case of white cloth- 90 rolls) COST = $140.40 (per case of black cloth- 90 rolls) COST = $155.52 (per case of clear tape-108 rolls)
Helmet Decals- To allow us to look as professional as possible, these decals would be on the front of the helmet ("Maritime"), sides of the helmet (athletics split "M"), and back (ship logo), and would also include numbers on the player's helmets. Here is a link to the website that we were hoping to use: http://www.prohelmetdecals.com/hockey.html
COST = $265
Slide Board- We have implemented a mandatory off-ice training program in order to be stronger and faster than everyone else. We need a slide board (or slide boards) for the guys to be able to train properly. This board will allow them to work on skating, stickhandling, passing and shooting:
http://www.hockeyshot.com/G1_Extreme_Slide_Board_Goalie_slide_board_p/slide-board-002.htm
COST = $379.95
Bosu Trainers (4)- Bosu trainers will help our players with their balance and functional strength:
http://www.palossports.com/store/proddetail.cfm/ItemID/3402/CategoryID/64/SubCatID/3112/file.htm
COST = $509.95
Skate Sharpener- Our practices are late at night, so most times when we get there, the pro shop is closed. In addition, a skate sharpening can cost between $8-10. With the sharpener on campus a skate sharpening would cost us pennies: http://www.wissota.com/toppage.htm
COST = $799.99
Make the SUNY Maritime hockey team a Division 1 program- If Penn State can do it?
COST = $88,000,000 (This includes a rink with two ice surfaces and endowed scholarships)
In addition to all of the above, we will take donations of any amount.
All checks should be made out to SUNY Maritime College with a notation it's for "Maritime Hockey". You can also buy Maritime Hockey gear; sweatshirts are $40, T-shirts are $20. We look forward to making you all proud of our accomplishments and thank you for your continued support of the program.
Sincerely,
Matthew Garofalow, Head Coach, mgarofalow@sunymaritime.edu

Hockey Opens 2010 With 6-2 Home Loss To CCM Saturday Night
THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (Jan. 19, 2010) – The Maritime hockey team opened the 2010 portion of the season with a 6-2 loss to the County College of Morris Saturday night at the Parkwood Sports Complex in Great Neck, Long Island. The Privateers fall to 4-7 overall (3-7 MCHC), while CCM improves to 5-5-0-1 with the victory.
The Suffolk Stars carried a 2-0 lead into the first intermission, but Maritime answered just 36 seconds into the second period with a power play goal by freshman Dylan Tyx, cutting the CCM lead to 2-1. Tyx roofed a shot into the top shelf after picking up a rebound at the right circle. Junior Dylan O'Malley-Joyce and senior Alexander Leoutoakos picked up assists on that goal.
Morris added two more power play goals in the penalty-riddled second period to improve the lead to 4-1. The Privateers had a goal disallowed with one minute to play in the second due to a penalty called just before the puck was shot.
In the third, CCM scored two shorthanded goals to build its lead up to 6-1, and then Maritime added its own shorthanded goal on a 4-on-3 against with just 21 seconds to play in the game. Freshman James McManus found the back of the net after a 2-on-1 down low with classmate Sean Dougherty, who picked up an assist on the goal.
The Privateers return to action on Saturday, Jan. 23, when they play host to MCHC-opponent Stevens (3-8) at 8:15 p.m. at the Parkwood Sports Complex.
