Hockey Falls To Columbia, 4-1, In Final Contest Of 2009

THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (Dec. 15, 2009) – The Maritime hockey team lost on the road to Columbia, 4-1, Saturday night in Hackensack, N.J., in the final athletic event of the 2009 calendar year. With the loss, the Privateers fall to 4-6 overall (3-6 MCHC) and the Lions improve to an even 6-6.

Columbia got on the board first in the opening period with a goal in the 11th minute. Maritime quickly responded just under three minutes later when freshman Daniel Tyx scored off assists from junior Dylan O’Malley Joyce and Alex Leoutoakos to tie the game at 1-1. The Lions would go ahead for good on a power play goal in the second and added another tally in the middle period and one more in the third to close out the scoring.

In net for the Privateers, freshman Matt Tatarian recorded 34 saves in the losing effort.

The Maritime hockey team returns to action on Saturday, Jan. 16, 2010, when the squad plays host to the County College of Morris at the Parkwood Sports Complex in Great Neck, N.Y. First faceoff is scheduled for 8:15 p.m.

Hockey Downs New Paltz, 4-1, Sunday To End Losing Streak

GREAT NECK, N.Y. (Dec. 7, 2009) – The Maritime hockey team defeated the Ice Hawks of SUNY New Paltz, 4-1, Sunday night at the Parkwood Sports Complex to end a small two-game losing streak. With the win, the Privateers improve to 4-5 overall (3-5 MCHC), while the Ice Hawks fall to 2-7 overall and in MCHC action.

New Paltz tallied the first goal of the game with 10:37 to go in the opening period, but Maritime quickly responded less than two minutes later when sophomore Cullen Bozza scored unassisted at 8:43. Junior Dylan O'Malley-Joyce gave the Privateers the 2-1 lead with 3:34 to play in the second period when he scored off a feed from sophomore Tom Mehmet.

Maritime added two late insurance goals by senior Keith Fricke and freshman Daniel Tyx. Both tallies were unassisted. In net for the Privateers, freshman Matt Tatarian faced 24 Ice Hawks’ shots and stopped 23 of them to pick up the win.

The Maritime ice hockey team returns to the rink for the final time in 2009 when they travel to Hackensack, N.J. to face Columbia on Sat., Dec. 12, before winter break begins. The puck drops at 7:45 p.m. at the Ice House Rinks.
