Hockey Rallies To Down Suffolk, 5-4, Saturday Night

THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (Nov. 9, 2009) – The Maritime hockey team scored four unanswered goals Saturday night to defeat Suffolk County Community College, 5-4, at the Parkwood Sports Complex in Great Neck. With the win, the Privateers improve to an even 3-3 (2-3 intra-divisional), while Suffolk falls to 0-4.

Suffolk got on the board first less than three minutes into the opening period and then built up a 4-1 lead with six minutes left in the second. Maritime got three straight goals from sophomores Cullen Bozza, Steve Miller and Greg Dolan to tie it before freshman Daniel Tyx scored the game-winner at 7:37 of the third to give the Privateers the 5-4 advantage. Senior Matthew Franzek tallied Maritime’s first goal in the first period. Bozza also added two assists as did senior Alexander Leoutoakos.

In goal, freshman Matt Tatarian made 12 saves on 16 shots by Suffolk to earn his third win of the season.

The Privateers return to action on Saturday, Nov. 14, when the squad will travel to Montclair, N.J. to take on Stevens at the Clary Anderson Arena. Puck drop is scheduled for 6 p.m.

Hockey Falls To St. Thomas Aquinas, 4-1, Saturday

THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (Nov. 3, 2009) – The Maritime hockey team lost to St. Thomas Aquinas, 4-1, on Saturday in a home game at the Parkwood Sports Complex in Great Neck. The Privateers fall to 2-3 (1-3 inter-division) with the loss, while the Spartans improve to 5-0.

Maritime got on the board first at 16:50 of the opening period, when senior Patrick Ferrie beat the St. Thomas goalie, the goal was assisted by freshmen James McManus and Sean Dougherty. The Spartans scored four unanswered goals, however – one in the first, two in the second and an empty-netter at the end of the game – to capture the victory.

The Privateers return to the ice this Saturday, Nov. 7, when they take on Suffolk at 8:15 p.m. at the Parkwood Sports Complex.

Hockey Splits A Pair Of Weekend Games

THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (Oct. 26, 2009) – The Maritime hockey team lost to first-place Fordham, 8-1, on Saturday at the Parkwood Ice Rink in Great Neck, N.Y., before rebounding to defeat the County College of Morris, 6-3, at the Mennen Sports Arena in Morrisville, N.J. on Sunday. With the split, the Privateers improve to 2-2 on the season (1-2 in intra-divisional games), while the Rams improve to 5-0 and the Titans fall to 1-1.

In the 6-3 win on Sunday, sophomore A.J. Noeldechen got things started for Maritime, banging in a rebound on the power play. Senior Keith Fricke later scored for the Privateers by stuffing home a rebound after a breakaway by freshman Dan Tyx.

Sophomore Cullen Bozza scored Maritime’s third goal when Tyx hit him with a pass as he was streaking to the net and he fired the puck passed the CCM goalie, he then added his second goal of the game later on a breakaway. Tyx finally scored a goal of his own on a breakaway, wristing a shot into the twine for the Privateer’s fifth goal. Senior Matthew Franzek tallied Maritime’s final goal in the win on a wrist shot from the slot.

In net, freshman Matt Tatarian was solid for Maritime, stopping all but three of the Titans’ shots on goal.

The Privateers return to the ice this Saturday, Oct. 31, when they play host to conference-foe St. Thomas at the Parkwood Ice Rink in Great Neck, N.Y. First faceoff is scheduled for 8:15 p.m.
