THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (Sept. 28, 2009) – On Saturday, the Maritime hockey team began a new chapter by opening the 2009-10 schedule with a come-from-behind win over NJIT, 5-4, at the Ice Hutch in Mount Vernon. The win is the Privateers first on the Division-III level and improves their record to 1-0, while the Highlanders fall to 0-1.
Trailing 4-2 with under a minute to play in the third, the Privateers pulled their goalie for an extra attacker and, while on a power play, senior Keith Fricke snuck one past the NJIT goalie to make it 4-3 with 49 seconds to play. The Highlanders would use their timeout to try to stop Maritime’s momentum, but it didn’t work as freshman Daniel Tyx scored his second goal of the game off a feed from sophomore Cullen Bozza, this one to tie it with just five seconds remaining in the third to force overtime.
In the deciding period, freshman James McManus hit streaking sophomore Greg Dolan up the ice with a pass that led to a breakaway goal for Dolan, the game-winner for the Privateers.
Maritime had owned a 2-0 lead earlier in the game with second-period goals by Tyx and sophomore Kyle McGrath off an assist by senior Ian Charity, but the Highlanders had stormed back with two goals to close out the second and two more to open the third.
The Privateers return to the ice on Friday, Oct. 16, when they travel up to Poughkeepsie, N.Y. to take on SUNY New Paltz. The puck drops at 9:15 p.m. at the Mid-Hudson Civic Center.
