Hockey Stages Late Rally To Defeat NJIT, 5-4, In Overtime

THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (Sept. 28, 2009) – On Saturday, the Maritime hockey team began a new chapter by opening the 2009-10 schedule with a come-from-behind win over NJIT, 5-4, at the Ice Hutch in Mount Vernon. The win is the Privateers first on the Division-III level and improves their record to 1-0, while the Highlanders fall to 0-1.
Trailing 4-2 with under a minute to play in the third, the Privateers pulled their goalie for an extra attacker and, while on a power play, senior Keith Fricke snuck one past the NJIT goalie to make it 4-3 with 49 seconds to play. The Highlanders would use their timeout to try to stop Maritime’s momentum, but it didn’t work as freshman Daniel Tyx scored his second goal of the game off a feed from sophomore Cullen Bozza, this one to tie it with just five seconds remaining in the third to force overtime.

In the deciding period, freshman James McManus hit streaking sophomore Greg Dolan up the ice with a pass that led to a breakaway goal for Dolan, the game-winner for the Privateers.

Maritime had owned a 2-0 lead earlier in the game with second-period goals by Tyx and sophomore Kyle McGrath off an assist by senior Ian Charity, but the Highlanders had stormed back with two goals to close out the second and two more to open the third.

The Privateers return to the ice on Friday, Oct. 16, when they travel up to Poughkeepsie, N.Y. to take on SUNY New Paltz. The puck drops at 9:15 p.m. at the Mid-Hudson Civic Center.

Alumni Game October 10, 2009

Maritime Ice Hockey Alumni:

SUNY Maritime College Head Ice Hockey Coach Bill Ducey invites you to attend the 2009 Cadet/Alumni Hockey game. Join your teammates, classmates, fellow alums and current cadets for three periods of rousing hockey action followed by a period of food, drink and camaraderie.

The game will be held at the Ice Hutch Ice Rink located at 655 Garden Ave. , Mount Vernon, NY 10552 , on Saturday, October 10th from 3:40 - 5:10 pm (phone: 914-699-6787 ). Directions and a link to a map to the rink are included at the bottom of this e-mail and will be posted on the website (see below). After game festivities will be decided upon later. Let us know if you've got any great ideas or can get us a deal.

The cost will be $50 per player for ice time (food and drink are separate) with a recommended donation to the 2009 team of an additional $50. We recognize that these are tough economic times so we are trying to keep the basic cost down. If you can support the team with an additional donation, it will be greatly appreciated. Even if you cannot attend the game, a donation will also be greatly appreciated. Definitely bring your checkbook to the rink, however, as Maritime Hockey Spirit Gear will be available for purchase. Some of the gear is on the website (see below again) so you can check it out. Note that if you have a high school hockey player in the house who wants to see what Maritime Hockey is all about, bring him or her along.

Please RSVP to Coach Bill Ducey at wducey@sunymaritime.edu or by telephone at 516-983-6587. If you cannot make the game, but would like to make a donation anyway, it may be sent to Coach Ducey at the Fort at SUNY Maritime College, c/o Captain William Ducey, 6 Pennyfield Avenue, Fort Schuyler, Bronx, NY 10465.

If you know of anyone who is not on the address list for this e-mail, please either forward this e-mail to them, or better, let me know so that I can forward this e-mail to them and put their names on the list for future announcements.

Finally, I am attempting to improve communications among the team alumni and about the current program. If you are interested in current team activity as well as information regarding prior years, please visit the Privateer Hockey Website at http://sites.google.com/site/privateerhockey/ and the Privateer Hockey Blog at http://privateerhockey.blogspot.com/ . The season hasn't started yet so at this point most of the information is about prior seasons. We are trying to get a cadet to keep us up-to-date about this season and will try to post new information as soon as it is available. If you have any newspaper articles, Porthole articles, pictures or other content from the Eight Bells yearbook, or other information from your era, please send it to me and I will post it on the website. Currently the early 80's have a considerable amount of information so you can see how we handled those years. Let us do the same for your era.

If you have any questions about anything addressed in this e-mail, please don't hesitate to e-mail Coach Ducey or me (or call me if you like). Thanks for your support of Privateers Hockey.

Sincerely,
Darrell Garvey
