Galli's Fourth Hat Trick Of The Season Propels Privateers To 4-3 Victory Over Met Hockey-Foe County College Of Morris
THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (Jan. 16, 2011) – Maritime hockey freshman forward Nick Galli (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Joseph By the Sea) recorded his team-leading fourth hat trick of the 2010-11 season, this one a natural hat trick, Saturday night to lead the Privateers to an exciting 4-3 victory over the MCHC-opponent County College of Morris. With its sixth-straight win, Maritime improves to 12-7 overall (10-2 MCHC), while CCM falls to 8-8-1 (6-3-1 MCHC).
Freshman Josh Hempel (Katy, Texas/Cinco Ranch) scored what turned out to be the game-winning goal on the power play with 8:02 remaining in the third period. He banged in a rebound off a shot from the point and gave the Privateers a 4-2 lead. CCM challenged late, scoring to make it a one-goal game with 3:46, but could not find the equalizer, as freshman Zach Dietrich (Point Pleasant, N.J./Christian Brothers Academy) preserved the victory, his second in as many nights by making a total of 29 saves on the night.
Morris scored two goals in the first period to go up 2-0, the first on a shot from the point by Calvin Spinelli that got through a screen at 16:26 and the second by Mark Zavorin, who went high on the glove side to beat Dietrich on a breakaway with 50 seconds left in the period.
Galli’s first of three-straight goals came at 11:54 of the second period on a shorthanded opportunity, when freshman Ross Freund (Westbury, N.Y./Chaminade) dumped the puck into the CCM zone and Galli beat the defenseman and scored on a wraparound to make the score 2-1, Morris. The freshman phenom struck again under two minutes into the third period, when he scored on a shot from just above the circle that beat the goalie to the blocker side. Freshman Dillon Dolansky (Monroe, N.Y./John S. Burke Catholic) picked up an assist on the game-tying tally.
Galli scored again at 15:41 to give Maritime its first lead of the night, 3-2, after he converted off a pass from junior Tom Mehmet (Little Neck, N.Y./St. Mary's).
CCM goalie Chris Riccardi was solid in net, despite the loss, making 30 saves.
Maritime returns to action on Sunday, Jan. 23, when the team travels to play non-conference opponent Bryn Athryn in Bryn Athyn, Pa. Game time is scheduled for 7:45 p.m. at the Jungé Ice Rink and Pavilion.

Hockey Picks Up Fifth-Straight Win With 3-2 Victory Over NJIT Friday Night; Privateers Take On Met Hockey-Foe CCM At Home In Great Neck Tonight
THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (Jan. 15, 2011) – On Friday night, the Maritime hockey team defeated ACHA D-II opponent NJIT, 3-2, in its first game back from the winter break at the Parkwood Sports Complex in Great Neck, N.Y. Freshman Steven Altini (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Joseph By the Sea) scored the game-winning goal on a power play with 15:29 to play in the third period. Altini took a pass from sophomore Frank Castelli (Little Neck, N.Y./St. Francis Prep.) and got the puck past Highlander goalie Nicholas Raite with help from a screen by freshman Josh Hempel (Katy, Texas/Cinco Ranch). Freshman goaltender Zach Dietrich (Point Pleasant, N.J./Christian Brothers Academy) made a save on all shots he faced in the third period to preserve the victory. He finished the night with 22 saves.
NJIT leading scorer Corrado Mancini scored the game’s first goal at 4:20 of the first period. Junior Greg Dolan (Floral Park, N.Y./St. Mary's) tied the score at 10:02 of the second when he stole the puck and went in on a shorthanded breakaway, dekeing to the backhand and beating Raite on the gloveside. Hempel scored less than two minutes later on a power play when he tipped in the rebound of a shot by freshman Dillon Dolansky (Monroe, N.Y./John S. Burke Catholic). Castelli picked up the first of two assists in the game on that go-ahead goal. NJIT responded just over a minute later, however, when Robert Amos beat Dietrich on a scrum in front of the net to tie the score at 2-2.
The Privateers were perfect on the penalty kill in the game, killing off all eight of the Highlanders’ power play opportunities. They were 2-for-5 on their own power play chances.
